Popular Destinations
Up until the last decade or so, au pair positions were more or less filled by Europeans, many of them from former eastern-bloc countries. Recently, the market has changed somewhat, as more Americans have become interested in living and working abroad.
In any case, while most people think of au pair jobs being located only in Europe, ‘globalization’ has virtually opened up the whole world. Au pairs can find work almost anywhere, for native families or those employed in foreign countries but looking for au pairs of specific nationalities.
Girls (and guys, of course) can find work almost anywhere, but certain places still top the au pair destination list. Europe remains the most coveted continent for au pairs, and a quick look through the web will reveal that Italy, Ireland, Spain, Germany, and France are some of the most popular destinations. European countries are perhaps also some of the easiest countries for American au pairs to work, both legally and culturally, as the differences aren’t as great as say, the US and Asian countries.
