This is a wonderful site and resource for Aupairs. I will be sure to pass it on to other aupairs!

Finding new friends is key to settling into a new community. I always suggest looking at volunteer opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and build experience and skills to put on your CV.

Great suggestion. I've actually looked off and on at Great Aupair's website, because they have au pairs from all over the world looking for work, as well as families looking for au pairs. Now that I have two children of my own and another on the way, I am often on the look-out for an au pair of my own!

If you're looking for an international agency, I highly recommend GreatAupair.com. During college I interned for a firm that represented GreatAupair, and the feedback was always so positive. They're really great at matching families and au pairs... I even considered signing up to be a nanny after graduation.

Generally au pairs are paid a small amount of money and their room and board. They are expected to provide child care but are not restricted to you and our family.

Hi there!

Knowing the language is going to help you out tremendously while abroad. As you said… even if you do have basic knowledge of the language before hand; that will all change once you get there. That is because speaking the language in the country it is spoken, especially with locals, is completely different from learning it back home.
It is not impossible, it just takes practice, patience, and the ability to laugh at yourself a little while you make mistakes! Language learning is actually really fun! While learning Spanish in Spain I realized how much I could pick up, how quickly I could understand what others were saying, and how my conversation skills grew immensely! It does take some time to be able to be completely “fluent” but after being completely immersed in Spanish, all day long, for just a few days, I realized that I was well on my way! It was such a great feeling of accomplishment to be able to converse with the locals- and dreaming in Spanish proved to me that I was really understanding the language!
