Au Pair Agencies
When looking for an au pair agency, it is best to find one that is a member of the IAPA, the International Au Pair Association. The IAPA is an international trade organization that holds its member agencies to high business standards, ensuring that families and au pairs are guaranteed the best possible experience. Their website is www.iapa.org, and is invaluable for au pairs beginning their search for reputable agencies. The IAPA has an extensive list of agencies, which would be an excellent place to start the search for the right agency.
Many people go it alone as au pairs, bypassing the au pair agency and finding host families through other means. While it is possible to go this route, it is not recommended. Agencies exist to serve the au pair and the host family, and offer services to both. Agencies are helpful, especially if a match is less than ideal. If an au pair is placed with a family and the situation does not work out, an agency will place the au pair with a new family. Good au pair agencies also help with legalities and insurance issues, making the transaction simpler for all involved.
The following agencies are recommended by IAPA:
www.aupairaustria.at - Au Pair Austria
www.culturalcare.com.br - Cultural Care Au Pair (Brazil)
Another agency I have recently discovered is Smart Au Pairs, and is based out of England. They are a full-fledged agency whose website alone is very helpful for anyone considering the au pair position. Check them out at - http://www.smartaupairs.com
